What is Christianity? |
| |
| |
Christianity is a major religion, claiming to stem from the life, teachings and death of Jesus in the 1st Century of the Common Era also known as "Jesus of Nazareth", "Jesus Christ" and the only "Son of God". |
| |
It has become the largest of the world's religions. Geographically Christianity is the most widely diffused of all faiths, it has a constituency of some 2 billion believers. |
| |
Its largest groups are the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox churches, and the Protestant churches; in addition to these churches there are several independent churches of Eastern Christianity. In all, there are estimated to be over 24,000 different sects of Christianity throughout the world today. |
| |
While christianity claims to be a religion created by Jesus and his disciples, there exist an unprecedented number of contradictions not found in any other major religion concerning its alleged founders. |
| |
In the first instance, the most important historic works of many of the actual disciples of Jesus such as Thomas have been refused to be acknowleged by the christian faith since its beginning. |
| |
In the second instance, the key dates and events associated with the life of Jesus are so obvious pagan and historically so (eg December 24th, Easter, "Virgin Birth" etc) as to call into question the historic accuracy of virtually every element of his claimed life. |
| |
In the third instance, the overwhelming influence of Paul of Tarsus (St. Paul) and St. Luke over and above any other historic figures, sometimes even including Jesus calls into question just who really founded christianity and for what motive(s)? |
| |
Finally, there exists a historic parallel religious movement to christianity variously known as the Gnostics, the Nazarenes, the Ebionites etc that not only claimed to hold the true and authentic texts of Jesus, but sought to live according to the message of peace, of wisdom and harmony. |
| |
In contrast, the history of christianity can be seen in terms of the organization being single minded in their dedication to murder, torture, misrepresent and wipe out all traces of this parallel group claiming the "true" message of Jesus, while at the same time seemingly acting in complete opposition to the views claimed to be the moral code of Jesus and upon which christianity is supposed to be based. |
| |
Therefore, it is no easy answer to consider what really is christianity beyond the simplistic arguments provided in context of social, historic cultural norms and what we have been told. |
