| Ebionites | ||
| (Hebrew ebionim, "poor men"). A powerful ascetic sect of Jewish Christians (1st to 4th century) who taught that John the Baptist was the real messiah, that all must obey the laws of Moses and that taught Jesus was only a human prophet who had received the Holy Spirit at his baptism. Controversially, they regarded Paul as a false prophet. |

| The most influential legacy of the Ebionites is our time system as it was the Ebionites under Zechariah who ordered all Jews to set their dates to 0 as the year of the birth of his son John. It is the obeying of this order that remains the basis for dating the year 0 as 0 and the year 2006 as exactly two thousand and size years since the birth of John the Baptist, not Jesus. Instead, Jesus was born in 6 CE. | ||
